How To Make Marshmallow Fondant

I realized that the only place I had this recipe was on a Halloween post, so I thought it deserved a post of its very own!

What you need:

16 oz mini-marshmallows
2-5 T water
2 lbs powdered sugar
½ c shortening (or more! Just keep the shortening out!!)

Put the marshmallows and 2 T of water in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 30 seconds, stir, microwave for another 30 seconds, stir, continue until it is melted. Dump 3/4 of the powdered sugar into the bowl. Grease your ENTIRE work space with the shortening and then grease your hands with shortening. Dump out the marshmallow/sugar mixture and kneed it like you would bread dough. Slowly add the rest of the powdered sugar and keep kneading. You will know when it is done. It will look like this:

Then coat the ball with shortening, wrap it in plastic wrap, put it in a Ziploc bag (squish all the air out) and put it in the fridge over night. It is messy, but really easy and CHEAP and fun! And your hands are really soft when you are done.

If you want to make colored fondant, add some gel food coloring to the fondant and knead it in. Add more until you get the color that you want. And wear gloves if you don't want your hands to turn colors. This stuff will last a good long time in the fridge if you wrap it up tight enough, so you can make it ahead of time.

This is what I used my very first batch of marshmallow fondant to make:

Super Hot Mama told me about this recipe back when I was planning these cupcakes for The Boy. She found it on Whats Cooking America. It is great stuff! Give it a shot!

I just made this as an icing for sugar cookies and it is perfect. I actually posted them on my food blog, eatsandtreats.wordpress.com. Mmmmm. Tasty marshmallows!

This is the ONLY kind of fondant I use anymore. Finally, a fondant that not only looks awesome, but tastes awesome too! I could not believe the results the first time I tried it!

I love how fondant on cookies looks! And it is so easy! You just Cut it out with the same cookie cutter you used for the cookie and it is perfect!!

I'm going to try this one. I love to decorate cakes and I use a lot of fondant. Sounds like a nice change to the regular stuff. Thanks for the recipe!

Oh! I'm making mini cupcakes for a baby shower this weekend, maybe I should try this for the icing? Hmm.. do I use a cookie cutter then?

Jessi said...

oh! and also...do i do a thin layer of icing to make sure it sticks to the cupcake? or is it good without? :)

Thank you so much for visiting my blog! I am so happy to see you posted a recipe for fondant! My mom and I were talking just today about trying to make some! I can't wait to try it!

Jessi, yes to both! You should use it for the cupcakes. Find a cookie cutter that is the size of the top of the cupcake. And you need frosting to make the fondant stick.

Find something with a cool texture and roll it over the fondant before you cut it (after you roll it out!

Loralee, yes, it will work on a cake! The friend that suggested it to me used it on a wedding cake and it was gorgeous. You might need to make a batch for each though.

And the picking it up and putting it ON the cake and spreading it out is harder than making it. (cupcakes are easier!!)

I would check online and watch some video of people doing it before you try. There are some great tips online!!

Loralee,

Actually one batch should work!! I thought you were doing a tiered cake. One batch should cover a double layered cake!!

I am so excited to see this! I am definitely going to be trying it. We are officially entering Birthday season around our house, so I will have lots of opportunities.

Wow, great! My husband's grandma made our wedding cake, but her only stipulation was "No fondant." In her opinion, it didn't taste good enough to waste the time and calories on :) I'm looking forward to making a yummy fondant :)

This is perfect! I've just found out the little man gets sick (he's nursing) when I have dairy. I've been wondering what on EARTH I could frost cakes and cookies with that ISN'T either a pile of crisco and sugar, or full of butter and milk!

Thanks!

Lorie said...

Aunt LoLo, you will need something to make the fondant stick. You usually use use frosting, but you could use melted chocolate!! :D
It isn't a pile of crisco and sugar...just a pile of sugar and sugar! But it is good! ;D

Fondant is gorgeous, but not the best tasting. Actually if you are at a catered reception they usually take the fondant OFF before serving. It is edible, but not really meant to be eaten because it isn't that great!!

This stuff tastes a TON better, but honestly If it were on an entire piece of cake I still wouldn't eat all of it. It would be like eating too many circus peanuts (the candy...not the actual peanuts!!)

Oh, yay! I've been toying with the idea of making my own wedding cake and I wanted to play with fondant but didn't even know where to begin. This is a perfect starting point so thank you! (and those cupcakes were super cool!)
