Flu: Round Two

Week before last we had the flu. Not all at once. One by one. It only lasted 24 hours for each person, but it took us a week to get through everyone. I was actually glad to have it out of the way. We have been sick over Thanksgiving for the last two years. I figured we paid our dues and could enjoy at least the rest of November virus free. Well you know what happens when you assume.

Yesterday The Boy wasn't feeling well. soar throat. After the first part of church yesterday he still wasn't feeling well and wanted to go home. It is very out of character for him, so we left early and went home to take a nap. He woke up a few hours later feeling better. So we went to dinner at my in laws like we do every Sunday.

Around midnight he woke up coughing. And coughing. And coughing. And then the puking started. And then he was having trouble breathing. It was the flu. But not the stomach flu. The nasty respiratory flu that sends kids to the hospital. I have never seen my son this sick and pray that I never have to see him this sick again.

He couldn't catch his breath, which wasn't helped by the fact that he was alternating between uncontrollable coughing and vomiting. We tried all of the tricks we have learned to help with breathing because of our fun adventures with Reactive Airway Disease. None of them helped. And it was getting worse.

I got dressed and ready to take him to the ER. I told him we were going to take him to the doctor so they could help him breathe and he told me that he just wanted a blessing.

I held him while his dad prayed that he would be blessed to be able to sleep and to be able to breath and to be able to heal. As soon as the blessing was done I got up to make sure that I had his insurance card and my cell phone for our trip to the ER. It wasn't two minutes before he was asleep on his dad's lap. And in sleep he was breathing easier. Hubby slept next to him to listen to him breathe. He slept the rest of the night and when he woke up he came into my room to tell me he felt much better. He was able to keep down some Gatorade and then some toast.

This afternoon he told me that when his dad got home he was going to thank him for giving him a blessing. I reminded him that he wasn't the only person we needed to thank.

I am so glad he is doing better! My youngest son has had croup 2-3 times every winter, usually involving trips to the ER. I know how scary not having them breathe can be. But to add vomiting onto it! Wow. Blessings and faith really help, don't they?
