Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a month away, so I thought I would share with you the way we celebrate Valentine's Day.

My husbands mother has some great family traditions. Basically most of them consist of celebrating EVERYTHING! Not just holidays and birthdays, but the last day of summer, the Golden Globes, the release of a new High School Musical movie. They all deserve a party.

Now to be honest, I didn't understand it all at first. I figured they just liked excuses for throwing a party. And they do, but now I know it is more than that.

Try to remember a day from 3 years ago. Just a regular day. It is hard to do. Almost impossible. Now try to remember something from Christmas 3 years ago. Anything. That was easier, wasn't it. It is almost like we have a separate file for those memories and because it isn't as full we can actually find them in our heads! So in my husband's family they try to make more of those memories.

And those memories are some of my favorite. And it is that theory that turns our Valentine's Day into something different than buying candy for your sweetheart. It is all about celebrating with people that you love.

We have a Pink and Red dinner where everything is pink, red or white. It can be as easy as eating something that was already red, like lasagna, or going a step further and making things pink and red that are not typically that color!

And then there are the treats. We each get everyone a little something special. The year Napoleon Dynamite came out everyone got Tater Tots. And we each take turns sneaking out the garage to ring the front doorbell and leave our treats to be discovered.

It is fun and doesn't take a ton of planning, but it makes some pretty great memories.

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day?

We do a red and white dinner too. One of our favorites is waffles with strawberries and whip cream. This year I might do turkey and cranberries.

Oh! That sounds yummy! I didn't get enough Turkey on Christmas, so I like that idea!

I haven't done much the last couple years. But I'm hoping to do heart shaped pancakes or eggs for breakfast and I don't know what else

What cute ideas! Well I'm a sucker for a surprise of any kind so I've tried to pass that love on to my husband. He's adjusted quite well and we now rotate both Valentine's Day and our Anniversary in terms of who plans it. We usually just go to dinner somewhere but the location is top secret and we give each other clues the day of (by email or hidden pieces of paper). I think I love to be the clue giver as much as I like to receive them now. My husband's clues are usually much more complex than mine but we both enjoy trying to figure out our destination!

our anniversary is the day before, but we try to celebrate it weeks or a month later so we can still fully participate in both days.

We love Abuelo's for dinner, that's almost always a given. Other times, we've gone out to a hotel for the night, out for a movie, went dancing, etc.

I sure wish our stake or ward would put on a dance this year!

Those sound like fun things to do. I love the idea of celebrating anything. I once knew a woman who celebrated when her car turned over 100,000 miles. It sounded so fun. Thanks for sharing such great ideas on your blog. I always enjoy reading it. :)

The cupcake on this post that you also have at the top of your blog is killing me. It looks sooooo good!

p.s. any reason for a party is good enough for me, so keep 'em comin'!
