Unpacking Day

Ah! The joy of moving! No Internet where the computer is and no computer where the Internet is...

The nice man whe will soon be my new best friend should be here today to fix that for me.

In the meantime, give me yourbest unpacking advice. I am going to need it!

When we moved into this house, I had all the furniture placed in the right spots as it was unloaded off the truck - but all the boxes went straight to the garage, grouped together by room. That way the house was never a disaster. I brought one box at a time in from the garage to unpack. I knew that if it was a big wreck inside, I'd get overwhelmed and freeze up. Wish I was there to help you - or to play with your kids while you unpack :)

I wish I could give you unpacking advice but we moved here over 9 months ago and I still have unpacked totes up in the attic. So maybe that is my advice?...don't even bother unpacking stuff you don't need or use!

Welcome to Texas! We just moved here last month (well, we moved back to Texas in September but just moved into our house and unpacked November 27!) I did what Lisa did in the first comment... it's hard enough unpacking and finding homes for things... but if you can do it in a non-messy house, it's better! Enjoy the unpacking and making your house a home!

I did the kitchen and bathroom essentials first. After that go directly to the bedroom. You'll sleep much better if your own room isn't total chaos which will make you more productive in the long run! Good luck!

Great advice from Lisa. I'm also with Jamie in that I'd only unpack the things I need and LOVE. I'm forever trying to declutter and simplify.

I'm gonna go with Lisa- I could pretend my house was in complete order 'cause everything went down to the basement. But, BUT our basement stayed a disaster for months and we've only very recently got that all cleaned up. :)

Just get it done as soon as possible, don't stop, and I mean DON'T STOP for anything but the bathroom and an occasional hand full of food...upbeat music and a couple of extra hands help too!

Growing up a military brat here's my advice. Find the boxes so you can set up the bathroom, the bedroom and the most rudimentary aspects of the kitchen - like your tea kettle. Then you have a place to rest while you do the rest. And finish your bedroom entirely so you have a place to just breathe without all the stress of looking at the rest of the mess. Good luck! Sending you some energy!

When we were in the military, we moved a good bit. I always set the kids rooms up first so they could feel settled. Kitchen was next so we could have food. The rest just takes time.

Just take your time and try not to be overwhelmed. I moved into an apt., so I didn't have a garage to put boxes in. So I had the movers put each box in the room it belonged in. That saved on time because I didn't have to search for boxes that belonged in each room.

I also left things packed. My daughter is 9 and I have 3 boxes full of her baby books. I don't want to get rid of them (in case we have another) but we have no use for them now. So i left them in boxes and stored them in the attic.

My #1 tip though.... unpack the coffee maker first. Facing unpacking with a hot cup of coffee is way better than without.

Good luck!

Internet first...everything else is secondarily important. ;)

Well, my unpacking advice would be related to my packing advice, which is to have labeled each box you pack up with the room that the stuff in it will be going to in the new house...and when you get there, put the boxes in the room according to the label. Bathroom and kitchen are always first because you need that stuff the most.

Good luck!

one room at a time is my best advice

I unpack as fast as I can so it is done. We pack all things from a room together so you aren't running from one room to the next. We keep tools in the back of the vehicle or the back of the truck so we know where they are first. We gets beds set up and furniture in place, then we go for the kitchen so we can eat. I will run a load in the dishwasher and then go to another room, if we come upon pictures we get them hung right then. instead of setting things aside, it helps to get the clutter out of there. Go back to unload dishwasher, another load. We pack the car with some essentials that we will need to help keep the kids occupied in the car and while we are unpacking.
If you don't have those things handy, what about running to walmart and getting some paint and paper and have the kids do some fun art (depending on their age), for their new room or to send to a friend they are missing. Grab a box of Popsickle sticks and have them do some craft projects.
