We didn't plant a garden this year. Mostly because I was a slacker, but the excuse I use is that last year the neighbors cat ruined most of the garden. I had a cute little squash plant until the neighbors cat ate it. Most of the tomatoes that started to ripen on the vine fell victim to the cat as well. The carrots...well those just didn't grow well. I can't blame that on the cat.
A neighbor of mine had the same problem and solved it by fencing in the entire area and covering the top with chicken wire. NO birds or cats can get in. And although it is a great idea, I don't see that happening in the near future.
But then I saw this on Apartment Therapy:
And I might have to give it a try! It might not work for carrots and tomato plants, but it would be a great way to do herbs. Suzanne planted radishes, lettuce, Swiss chard, beets and turnips too.
And all she did was drill holes in the bottom of the rain gutters and fill them with Miracle Grow. Pretty clever!
You can read more about Suzanne's garden here.

THAT IS BRILLIANT! I bet it would even work for the little cherry tomatoes. And it even looks pretty!
I like that--it's functional AND cute.
That's to darn cute! What a great idea...

this is cute. I don't like the idea of putting them on the sides of the house--maybe I'll do some along my deck railing. Thanks for your great blog!
Brilliant!
Wow! Love it. Even my slacker self can't really think of an excuse not to try that one.
