I was hoping he would ask me out, but instead he told me about how he was having dinner with his sister and then had to run errands. He had just moved into a house with his best friend Chip. Desperatly not wanting to have to wait another week to talk to him, I told him I could run errands with him. So I guess in a way I invited myself on our first date.
The next few hours that followed included a trip to a consignment store where we saw a homeless man relieving himself on the side of the building, a trip to a bedroom store to buy new sheets, a trip to Target and finally a stop at Thirty-one Flavors for Ice Cream. He spent the entire time trying to tell me a story, but interrupting himself by veering of on tangents. It is still one of my favorite things about him, that he goes of on tangents when we are talking.
Sitting in his car outside of the ice cream shop he finally finished his story. When he told his dad he was going out on a date his dad gave him $20 to use towards the date. We joked that $20 was the limit. Once we had spent the money our dating budget was up and we would have to move on. He tucked the $20 bill into the fuse box of his truck.
11 years later to the day that $20 bill is still on our fridge. We joke about what we will use it on when we are sick of each other. Last night, not even realizing the date, we joked about the $20 again. Sarah McLachlan is coming out with a new CD. I think I will hold on to it for a while longer. There aren't really any new songs on the album anyways.

What a really cute story! I love that you still have the $20.
Oh, and Sarah McLachlan is my favorite artist. But there are only two new songs on the album - just buy them off of iTunes like I did!
How cool that you still have the 2o dollar bill. I don't think I could ever spend it.
Such a cute story!! Thanks for sharing.
What a super cute story! It would have been spent immediately, in this household.
I hope you keep that 20 dollars forever! So sweet.
I think that is just the sweetest story I have ever heard.
Oh that is such a cute story.....and so romantic.
I actually saw Sarah McLachlan shopping at my local Costco. It looked like she was with a sister and a niece buying a snowboard.....isn't that cute?
Erin, we always joke about the lack of new songs on her albums. I think she has release 100 versions of all of her 15 songs!!
We love her though!
I hope we have it forever too!
And Sarah shops at Costco! I knew I liked her!
Such a sweet post today, I love smoopy love stories. Thanks for sharing with all of us!
That is such a cute story! I love that you still have the $20 bill. Now I want to hear the long and embarrassing story!
That is such a great first date story. How neat that you still have the $20!
too cute, lorie!
What a sweet story. I love Sarah McLachlan.
AWE....I love that picture of you two on the floor. I think keeping the $20 forever is awesome but even better would be, if you had a boy (I feel bad I don't know) maybe passing it on to him the night he thinks he is going to tell his girlfriend he loves her for the first time or something. How sweet of a story he could tell her.
That is such a great story and so neat that you still have that same $20.00 bill
What an awesome story! Thanks so much for sharing this!
That's a great story!
That is a perfect story. Those dating tales are priceless.
My wife and I met on a pile of laundry.
Hold on to that 20 until your 20th anniversary, then treat yourself to something real nice!
Chris, that is a cute idea. But I am a little too sentimental. I have a feeling that $20 is going with me to the grave!
Great story, great picture!!!
That is the sweetest story ever. Thanks for sharing
I'm just reading this post. Soo sweet and special! Kelly
