Kim and I were tweeting back and forth about candy buttons last night. I never realized that there were recipes for homemade candy buttons out there. There are two similar recipes that I found, one pictured above on Philadelphia Grubster and one from Rachael Ray.
The candy itself is easy enough to make. The two recipes listed above very slightly, but this is the combination of the two that I would try.
What you need:
3 cups of powdered sugar, sifted
2 egg whites
1/2 tsp lemon juice
strips of paper (non toxic computer paper or edible rice paper)
What you do:
Mix the powdered sugar, egg whites, and lemon juice on low until combined, then beat on high for 5 - 10 minutes until thick and smooth.
Divide into separate bowls to mix in food coloring, cover each bowl until ready to use.
Pipe mixture onto paper strips and let set up completely (at least 12 hours). Once candy has completely set up you can store in a dry, air tight container for a week.
So why the fascination with candy buttons? Because I think it would be really cute to pipe tiny hearts instead of dots and use them as a valentine. My pipping skills are not that fabulous, but if my kiddos ever decide to stop being sick then I will give it a go!
