And I think this does the trick:

This cake by Fritz Knipschildt is covered in truffles. Of course, he is considered one of the top chocolatiers in the world...so I won't be trying this any time soon. But I am thinking it would be fun to do a single layer birthday cake covered in giant gumballs. Or powdered donuts. Oreo Truffles.

That just looks delicious!
Just wanted to let you know, I made the "out-of-this-world" cupcakes with the black sugar and white stars that you posted about a couple of weeks ago for my little one's birthday this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration!

OOOOHHHH! I just love truffles...I'm not a very good froster either...I remember being in culinary school and the chef would always yell at me and say:"Stephenie, you're always rushing, Icing a cake is a work of art!" I did get a little bit better..

Wouldn't that be a cute golf-themed cake?
I think you could make a 8 inch round stacked cake and then cover it with cake balls. Think of that yummy deliciousness.
Beautiful, but I think your powdered doughnut idea would be even cuter!!!
