Don't Fret the Sweat [$100 Visa Gift Card Giveaway]

At the end of the 2008 school year I was helping out with my son's 1st grade end-of-school party in Arizona.  By May it is HOT outside, so when the kids piled back into the classroom after recess, ready to party, they were sweaty and stinky.  I was actually surprised at just how stinky a class full of 7-year-olds smelled.  I felt really bad for their teacher who had been putting up with the smell every afternoon since the weather warmed up in March.  It was then that I decided my son would be wearing deodorant to school.

Isn't he too cute to be stinky?

Remembering the experience, I had my daughter start wearing deodorant in first grade, when the weather was warmer, and I am sure I will do the same with my youngest when she gets older too.   It is easy to introduce new routines when they are young and it makes them feel like they are getting to do something grown-up.  This option is much more appealing then waiting until middle school when it might just come out sounding like I was telling them they stink.  Like they don’t have enough to deal with in middle school!

How do you deal with your kiddos and the deodorant situation?  How old were they, or will they be, when you start having them wear antiperspirant or deodorant?  I don’t know about you, but this isn’t something I remember planning when I thought about having kids.

Do you ever have questions or concerns and you don't know whom to ask?  Unilever, the company that makes Degree® , Dove®and Suave®  products, has made it their business to help parents and kids remain cool, calm and confident throughout the day.  Now they are taking it a step further than just manufacturing deodorant and antiperspirant.  They have brought together community partners and a panel of experts to offer an educational resource available to you on the Don't Fret The Sweat Facebook page

Don't Fret The Sweat provides parents with tools and kids with opportunities to conquer sweat-inducing moments, build confidence and be inspired in everything they do.

They want to hear from you, so head over and like their page and then come back here and let me know one thing about parenting that makes you sweat.  Your comment will enter you to win a $100 Visa Gift Card and a Don’t Fret The Sweat gift pack.  The contest will run from 10/04/2011 - 11/04/2011.

  1. Yes - He's TOO cute to be stinky!

One thing about parenting that makes me sweat? Hmmm...Has to be taking all 3 kids into a public restroom. (DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!)

  2. I'm only a parent to my fur baby, Sadie. But as I live in a city, I sweat when she wants to act less than lady-like in front of people. Like she usually decides she has to potty right in front of a church. And then I have to clean up in front of the church-goers too.

  3. We live in AK so my kids don't sweat too much, but I work up a sweat just getting all 3 kids in all their snow clothes, jackets, hats, gloves, and boots on. Just thinking about it makes me hot.

  4. I don't have my own kids yet, but I help other people take care of theirs... at a child fitness center. There's a lot of sweating going on! I'd never thought about when I'd introduce my own kids to deodorant, but I love your approach to it :) I think you've just saved me one parenting headache in the future. Thank you!

  9. I too have never thought about this for my kids either! Guess, I better get to thinking...hope mine don't stink.

I am most sweaty when doing the mad dash home, picking up kids, making dinner, baths and bed. The 2nd job I like to do it. A mother's (in my case a single mother's) job is never over.

  26. I have two girls, and I really sweat over what they learn from other kids at school. I can help them study, learn to use deodorant, wear clothes that keep them warm or cool depending on the weather, and which fork to use for the salad course. But my kids come home and tell me about how another girl called them fat. Or they tell me that one of their friends has to move because the Daddy just lost his job. Or they ask me to tell them the definition of a bad word or something inappropriate for their age. The world has them more hours in the day than I do and I just want to help them learn how to get through it as good people. I'm sweating just thinking about it!

along with the fact that bananas stain, all new mothers need to know that their sweet smelling little ones will need to wear deodorant to continue to be sweet (smelling).

I call all kiddos Sir and M'am as I hope they will learn that respect for others.

  73. I "sweat" about whether I'll get to have kids, since I'm 40 and have been looking for work for almost 3 years, with another 2 year span between undergrad and grad school when I couldn't find jobs paying what I'd earned without a degree, let alone more. I worry I won't earn enough, since I'll likely be a single parent. I don't "sweat" whether I'll be nurturing, but I DO "sweat" being patient, because kids do crazy stuff, whether it's dangerous, irritating, rude, etc., I see how stressful it can be. Luckily, I see how rewarding parenthood is, too. I see my friends with their kids and am so proud of what great parents they are, especially those who didn't have a good model.

While I know they are ready for it, I am not in that place yet. I can't imagine giving up some of my freedoms (not having every moment of every day planned out, being able to take spontaneous weekend trips, going out to fancy restaurants for diner, and more). I might get there someday, but for now--it definitely makes me sweat!
