They used a drop cloth as a canvas, masked off a snowflake with painters tape, and then sprayed it with gold spray paint. Then they poked some holes and put Christmas lights through them. Pretty darn gorgeous if you ask me.

Hardware Snowflake
I love the DIY stuff that they come up with at Lowe's for their Creative Ideas catalog. Like this snowflake painting:
